Piston Rings

piston ring surface texture, surface roughness, roughness of piston ring materials

Piston rings and cylinder linings are some of the most engineered surfaces in the world. They perform the amazing feat of sealing while sliding against enormous pressure and high temperature, for millions of cycles. In racing vehicles the task is even taller, and the engineering even more amazing.

This series of textures shows the surfaces of several materials used in piston rings. They range from commonplace to somewhat exotic. The data was generated using a Zygo ZeGage optical profiler and OmniSurf3D analysis software.
