A collection of stones can be a good “macro” analogy for micro texture.
The dataset was created with a 3D scanner. As with the marbles in this dataset, a 3D measurement tends to capture the full dimensions of each rock in the field of view, while a 2D slice through the data will likely miss the highest peak or measure the largest dimension of any stone. This can affect surface texture parameters such as peak curvature. Read about why in this blog post.
